Diliman, Quezon City – In celebration of its 35th founding anniversary, in partnership with homecoming of batch ’93 of the UP College of Medicine, the University of the Philippines Medical Alumni Society have decided to give back to the institution that helped shaped them to be the prestigious doctors and professionals they are today. With #TakbonUPo, the fun run held at the UP Diliman Academic oval, organized with the help of Trisports Solutions Inc., the batch raised funds for the UP School of Health Sciences. Not only that, the organization went the extra mile to show support for the beloved varsity teams of the university. They invited some of the athletes to run and to grace the event to raise awareness on the importance of backing up the efforts of the teams as they strive for gold in the games and bag the championship, as well as to collect donations for the UP Varsity Championship Drive.
A total of 482 runners, from both the society members and the general public, registered a run of 1 loop (2.2km), 3 loops (6.6km) and 5 loops (11km) around UP Academic Oval. Earlier than the first crow of the rooster, participants arrive at the venue to register, check in their baggage, and collect their race kits. After the opening prayer led by Kuya Kim Atienza, followed by a quick weather update, our runners stood in attention to listen to the race briefing and gamely joined in the warm up session brought to us by the very energetic coaches from Anytime Fitness Araneta Center Cubao – Coach Michael and Coach Paul. There was a warm up for every distance to make sure that the runners have properly stretched and gained the momentum to run. By 4:30, the first siren sounded and our 11KM runners were off! While waiting for their designated wave, the participants checked out the activity booth by Sketchers Performance, where they were challenged to go the distance via treadmill, wearing their line of GoRun footwear. There were also booths from Fastrack Courier Services, who gave away delivery discount vouchers, and the UP Varsity Office, led by Coach Oscar “Oskie” Santelices, who gave quick talks on why we should support our varsity teams and collected donations for the Champ Drive. The event was also graced by the members of the UP Softball Team, UP Women’s Volleyball Team, and UP Street Dance Team. Among the hundreds of the runners, Alexander Austado and Jennifer Pulmones-Paz emerged as the overall male and female winners in the 11km distance categories with the finish times of 01:33:59 and 01:45:32 respectively. Other winners were Gian Sibayan (00:31:28) and Diane Mabuhat (00:52:21) for the 3 rounds and Jomar Udtohan (00:07:53) and Diane Ong (00:09:16) for the 1 round category.
Our winners didn’t just take home medals and bragging rights, but also gift vouchers and drawstring bags from Skechers Performance. But it’s not just our top finishers who took home prizes; there were raffles and games, where we gave out merchandise from Anytime Fitness Araneta Center Cubao and gift certificates worth PhP 500 each! Overall, everyone had a great time supporting the cause of the UP Medical Alumni Society and the UP College of Medicine batch 1993. And in the end, it truly is the people who put the “fun” in fun run.
